Rapid development in the group’s chartering activities and the demand for increased shipping space led, in 1972, to the formation of a new ship owning and operating company, Nigerian Green Lines Ltd (NGL).

From the initial purchase of M/V Ahmadu Tijani in 1973, the company expanded in six short years to become the largest privately-owned shipping company in West Africa with a fleet of six general cargo vessels totaling approximately 88,000 tons dead-weight was accorded the status of national carrier by the Federal Government.

One of NGL’s objectives was to ensure greater participation of indigenous shipping lines in liner conferences an the company is a founder member of the Association of Nigerian Indigenous Shipping Companies. From the late 70s, NGL backed regular monthly sailings from European ports, especially Antwerp and Hamburg direct to Lagos.

Throughout the 80s, a programme of reorganization and vessel upgrading meant NGL retained its position as one o the leading ocean carries in Nigeria. Its efficiency and performance resulted in NGL being the first and only privately-owned shipping company to be admitted as a functional member of the Continent West Africa Conference (COWAC) a well as the UK/West Africa Lines Joint Service (UKWAL). On a higher scale, NGL is a principal member of the London Baltic exchange, the nerve of world shipping.
